KBSJ is the only public radio station to be powered by wind. This off-grid configuration has three 10kW turbines and a propane-fired generator for backup power. The station was built in 2001. It serves a large area in Northern Nevada and South Central Idaho.
I chose to switch energy suppliers from nuclear/coal/oil/hydro to 100% wind to reduce my carbon footprint.
Union Pacific Railroad is committed to being the green transportation provider of choice for the expanding wind energy market. Union Pacific joined the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) in December 2007 and provides door-to-door rail transportation solutions for the movement of wind turbine components.
Freight trains are almost four times more fuel-efficient than over-the-road trucks and have less impact on greenhouse gas emissions than trucks.
Utilizing the efficiencies of rail transportation and backed by the greenest locomotive fleet in the industry, Union Pacific moves one ton 830 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel.

I live in coal country and every wind turbine put up in this regions helps make a difference in the "landscape" of PA. If you have ever driven on Rt 22 from Pittsburgh to State College, you pass by many coal power plants and visably pollutant laden towns surrounding them. As you approach Altoona the landscape changes... no more coal plants, but now wind power plants and trees. If wind power hadn't been harnessed in this area, perhaps one more coal power plant would have marked the landscape here instead. I prefer to see the turbines. I teach a class on wind energy at PSU and I brought them to this area (with a tour guide) to experience the turbines for themselves this past spring. It was by far their favorite part of the class.
Wind matters to me because technology matters to me. It creates stable clean energy jobs like mine.
Wind energy, particularly, offshore wind, matters to me because it is one of the few large scale options for renewable energy in the Southeastern United States. When it comes to renewable energy, one size does not fit all in this country. We need to optimize our clean energy deployment for each region of the country. When it comes to wind, don't count the South out just because our land based resources are limited. Offshore wind can contribute in a significant way given the national political will to make it so.
Wind power allows me to visit the most beautiful parts of our country, and have fun doing it, while working. This photo is taken from the top of one WTG observing the rotor being set on another.
I have been in the wind business for 24 months, and I feel that I am finally doing something that matters. We have a global crisis as the price of oil rises, and the renewable energy sector is great way to do your part as a citizen.
